Apollo Bay P-12 College is a school of 250 students extending from
Prep to Year 12. The College is located on the coast, 190 kilometres
from Melbourne. Based at the foot of the Otways, it services the
town of Apollo Bay and the surrounding rural community.
Our College currently offers courses of study which address the
areas of Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Languages
other than English (LOTE), Maths, Science, Technology and
Humanities. In line with government policy, in 2007 the College
mplemented a new core curriculum -the Victorian Essential Learning
Standards (VELS).
In 2009 the College student management structure will consist of
three areas P-4, 5-9, and 10-12. Each area will be coordinated by a
leading teacher. The College has Year P-2 multi age classes and Year
3-4 multi age These groupings are consistant with the stages of
learning. Early Years initiatives are being implemented in P- 4
classes, Prep students undertake Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)
activities. The school encourages parent participation in activities
such as listening to reading, helping with process writing, typing
stories and PMP. Parent helpers enhance the programs and give
students more individual assistance. Cross age tutoring is used
throughout the curriculum to foster a sense of responsibility
between older and younger students.
Students in Years 5-6 are organised into two or three multiage
classes. Years 5-6 work in a renovated Learning Centre and in 2009
all students will have access to a regional and local agreement
which will provide all students in 5-6 with a Net Book computer.
A number of vertical and horizontal groupings exist for students
between years 7 and 12. The aim is to socially mix students whilst
providing structures that promote leadership and personal growth.
More information can be found on individual team links.
Apollo Bay P-12 College offers students a high level of teacher
access, especially in the senior years through smaller class sizes.
The college has introduced the VCAL program in addition to the VCE
in an attempt to cater for students who are aspiring to enter the
work force directly after completing year 12. VET units are also
offered.
A diverse range of experiences is made available to students
through the camps, excursions and outdoor education programs. The
college is a participant in the Advance Programme, with students in
the Surf Lifesaving Cadets. Students from all levels of the school
participate in excursions and field trips around the local
community. The early secondary and Year 11 Melbourne trips introduce
students to a large city centre. In Years 10 and 11 students
participate in a structured work experience program in Melbourne and
the local area. The school utilises community agencies and local
businesses for work experience placements and guest presentations.
In the past, the biannual college production has provided the
opportunity for students to participate in a high standard public
performance. A recent innovation has been to encourage students to
be involved in a larger range of smaller drama and music
performances for the school and local community.
In 2006 stage 1of our building project was completed. At a cost
of 2.1 million dollars the new Art, Information Technology,
Materials, Music and Science rooms provide an excellent learning
environment for our students. We are still awaiting funding for
stage 2 which will see the entire school rebuilt.
Students’ recreational learning is well accommodated by a
recently rennovated leisure centre, swimming pool, oval and ball
courts. The school oval facilitates athletics and sporting
activities.
The school has a commitment to improving technology access. In
2009 students in years 5,6,7 and 10 will have access to a Net Book
or Lap Top. Over the next three years we aim to equip all students
from year 5 upwards with a portable computer.
Our priority has been the achievement of excellence with a focus
on literacy and numeracy. This has been resourced with additional
teachers in RESTART at Year 7 and Reading Recovery at Year 1.
